I hope this correspondence finds everyone rested and rejuvenated after a pleasant and stress-free summer vacation. I enjoyed part of my summer back in Chicago where I was born and raised. I spent time with my father, my sister and her family, and my longtime friends. It was wonderful to spend time with these important people back in the states. The greater part of my time was here in Kathmandu. I presented a workshop for the teachers a few weeks ago at a local Nepali school about the importance of 21st Century Literacy skills and best practices as educators. About 40 teachers participated and it was valuable for all involved. As your child’s fifth grade teacher, I wanted to write to say hello, introduce myself to you, and share a little bit about the first few weeks of school.
I am Patrick McAndrew. I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago. I attended Loyola University there, and graduated (many years ago) with a dual major in Special Education and Elementary Education. I successfully completed an online Masters Degree program in educational leadership with the University of Northern Iowa this past May. I began travelling to South Asia in the summer of 1998, and returned every year after that. I fell in love with Nepal and its people and it was a personal hope and dream to live and work here some day. I am now beginning my seventh year of employment at Lincoln School and love being here in Nepal and most especially at our fine school. My co-teacher and “Assistant Extraordinaire” is Ms. Meenakshi Rana who is not only a coworker, but a dear friend.
I have set some important personal and professional goals for the year ahead. Many of these involve becoming a stronger advocate for the environment, the people of Nepal, and the students of Lincoln School. I will fill you all in on some of the exciting projects and plans for the year when we meet for our Back to School/Curriculum Night scheduled for Monday, August 17th. This will be a great opportunity for you to meet me and get a better idea of what the fifth grade year will look like. Hopes and Dreams/Goal Setting conferences are scheduled for Friday, August 28th. I will keep you posted on the timings as they are determined, but be sure to mark these two important events on your calendar. I am in the process of redesigning our Grade Five Classroom website where a lot of the information will be easily available.
Being an educator is something I am incredibly passionate about. I cannot imagine anything more important, rewarding, and enjoyable. I am looking forward to meeting each of you, and building, and in some cases, strengthening ( with families I’ve worked with already), a partnership that will help your child have a fifth grade year that is filled with learning opportunities, explorations, and discoveries: a year in a classroom of cooperation, creativity, and commitment to the pursuit of academic excellence. See you very soon!
Sincerely, your Grade Five Teacher,
Patrick S. McAndrew (firstname.lastname@example.org)
